What’s the Future of Surveillance Systems?

Security Cameras & Access Control

In recent years, surveillance systems have become an essential business tool. They can help businesses with their security, insurance coverage, and even help bridge the gap between companies and their clients. In a Statista report from 2022, the global surveillance technology market was valued at over 130 billion U.S. dollars. With all this growth comes updates and changes to systems you need to stay up to date on. At Usherwood, we continuously monitor upcoming surveillance features to ensure our solutions grow and change as needed.

Uses of Surveillance Systems and Their Future Improvements

Surveillance systems are predicted to continue evolving to better meet businesses' changing needs. Currently, they are mostly used for monitoring business perimeters for security measures, keeping a record of sales, entry and exit of personnel, documenting natural disasters or crime for insurance claims, live-streaming events, and providing information on environmental conditions.  A few expected improvements include:

Product Inventory and Availability is Improving

China is still dealing with COVID and manufacturing-related issues, causing shortages in many surveillance cameras. In November of 2022, a law was passed essentially banning some top Chinese manufacturers from FCC approval within the United States. Other European countries have done the same. Many manufacturers were already hit with a ban on certain Chinese manufacturer chips used in products sold to the US Government. With these changes, and the manufacturing related issues, vendors have chosen to manufacturer their chips elsewhere such as India, South Korea, and Vietnam.

The Cloud is Continuously Growing

Cloud based data storage has become the preference for most organizations and video surveillance is no different.  These systems typically utilize hybrid clouds such as Verkada systems or Full Cloud, meaning companies will have increased efficiency and storage in their systems for recorded data and analytics.

Security and Threat Mitigation Before it Happens

Organizations around the country are looking to utilize cameras and technology to automatically detect weapons that are brought onto their property. Many companies already use cameras and image reading technology to be able to detect car models and plate information but it's expected cameras will next be able to identify any danger or threat that comes onto an organization's property.

More Coverage With Less Cameras

Single-lens and multisensory cameras are also starting to be utilized more. Instead of installing multiple cameras, companies will have access to fewer cameras with increased visibility and expanded fisheye features that can cover more space. More data and content will be able to be captured, but not at the expense of having to install more cameras to do so.

New Trends in Lighting and Motion Detection

Consumer-grade cameras have been shipping white light cameras, which are cameras with actual lights built into them. This trend has slowly and steadily entered professional markets to assist with motion detection and image/video quality. When motion is detected, a light will turn on and immediately draw attention to the camera as a visual deterrent while lighting the subject in full color.
